Vented vs Unvented Cylinders – Which Is Right for Your Home?

Vented Cylinders

(Gravity-Fed Systems)
Vented cylinders rely on a cold water tank (usually in the loft) to supply hot water. They are simple, reliable, and often easier to maintain.
  • Uses a header tank in the loft for feed and expansion
  • Operates at low pressure (unless boosted by a pump)
  • Simple to install and repair
  • Usually lower initial cost, but may take more space and provide lower water pressure

Unvented Cylinders

(Pressurised Systems)
Unvented cylinders connect directly to your mains supply, giving high-pressure hot water throughout your home. They need extra safety devices and must be installed by a trained professional.
  • Strong, consistent water pressure at taps and showers
  • Requires expansion vessel, pressure relief valves, and safety controls
  • No loft tank needed; saves space and reduces risk of freezing or contamination
  • Must meet Building Regulations; regular servicing recommended

Choosing the Right System

If you want better water pressure and no loft tank, an unvented system is usually best. Vented systems remain a cost-effective option for some homes. Our engineers will advise based on your property, water supply, and household hot water needs.
